Аннотация
В статье предпринята попытка реконструкции военной карьеры Аврелиана до провозглашения его императором. Это наиболее сложный для реконструкции период его биографии. В условиях нестабильности III в. продвижение по служебной лестнице в армии предоставляло уникальные возможности для амбициозных и талантливых выходцев из низших слоев. Карьера Аврелиана является ярким примером того, как провинциал прошел путь от рядового воина к пурпуру. Флавий Вописк упоминает различные должности, занимаемые Аврелианом, однако современные исследователи подвергают сомнению достоверность этих сведений.
