Abstract
The article presents the results of rescue archaeological excavations conducted to preserve the identifi ed archaeological heritage site “Cultural Layer 5th – early 20th century of the “Citadel and Historical City within the Fortress Walls of Derbent” landmark.” During archaeological observations in the Park of Military Glory, Excavation area XXXIX was laid out, located in the central part of the medieval shakhristan. Three cultural layers were uncovered. The fi rst layer is anthropogenic and dates to the modern period. The second layer dates to the second half of the 19th – fi rst third of the 20th century. The third layer belongs to the Seljuk and pre-Mongol period (11th – fi rst third of the 13th century). Layer 3 yielded a representative collection of ceramics, individual artifacts, and coins. Associated with Layer 3 are the remains of a residential and utility complex, including a building wall, four furnaces-corsi, and a refuse pit. Among the fi nds, fragments of glazed, ornamented facing tiles with Kufi c inscriptions and a fragment of a stucco panel – half of a small arch, likely representing decorative elements of a mihrab – are of particular interest. The cessation of the functioning of the identifi ed dwelling and its associated domestic remains occurred in the fi rst third of the 13th century and was caused by the military-political events of that time (invasions by the Mongols and Khwarazmshah Jalal al-Din).
