V.I. Kulakov (Moscow) – Archaeological Sites of the Amber Coast

Abstract

This is an attempt to identify the original source of the Great Amber Road of the Roman period (the Vistula variant). In the 1st millennium BC, the western end of the Sambia Peninsula was used by the local population exclusively for the placement of burial mounds with cremated urns. At the beginning of the era, with the stabilization of the amber trade in the studied microregion, two groups of archaeological monuments appeared, cutting off the mouths of two streams from the rest of the land. Hypothetically, these are the loading points for amber raw materials and the sending of trade caravans to the south by sea. Both groups of monuments mark the maximum placement of amber deposits in coastal waters and under beach sand, easily accessible to the ancient inhabitants of the peninsula. The early Middle Ages is characterized by the absence of groups of Prussian archaeological sites in the studied microregion. Judging by the results of mapping, they move from the coastal edge in the eastern and southeastern directions.
