Abstract
This a study of two coin hoards (CH XI, 154, 155) discovered at from the Bosporan settlement of Polyanka in 1984 and 1985, one of which is a garrison treasury of the katoikia, the other – the cash of two katoikoi. The uniqueness of the 1984 hoard is that it is the largest assamblage of coins for the military purpose: Bosporan anonymous obols (150 pieces) and hastily re-minted Panticapaeum obols of the “Apollo/eagle” type (907). The unusual nature of these coins lies in their specific function – for the payment of wadges to mercenaries. “Pure” copper and a new coin alloy, brass, were used for their minting, which made it possible to give the coins a conventional, infl ated value.
