Abstract

The article discusses the controversial issues of assessing the events in Rome in 22 BC, when the city plebs locked the senators in the Curia Julia and threatened to set fire to the building unless Augustus was granted a dictatorship, a one-year and permanent consulate, and the cura annonae. The author believes that the plebs’ uprising was not provoked by Augustus, but was a reaction to the consequences of natural disasters that caused food shortages, and did not seek to do away with the curia in principle.
