Abstract

In 2022, a team of the Joint Expedition of the Lomonosov Moscow State University and the Southern Federal University discovered a collective Grave 8 in the northern section of the Tanais necropolis. For the region between the Sala and Manych Rivers, it has a unique design in the form of a bi-chamber undercut with parallel rooms oriented along the west-east line. Judging by the inventory, the burial dates back to the second half (possibly the end) of the 2nd – early 3rd century AD. Typologically close burials in the region are known only at the turn of the 1st century BC – 1st century AD. Considering the artifi cial deformation of the skulls of most of the buried, they can be attributed to the Sarmatian-Alanian population of Tanais of the fi rst centuries AD.
