Abstract

The petroglyphs at Kanozero Lake (the Kola Peninsula, the Umba River basin) were discovered in 1997. Since the discovery, petroglyphs have been documented by various methods, and by 2011 more than 1200 rock carvings were identifi ed at 18 panels. In 2017–2019, during the monitoring and documenting of petroglyphs by the Kanozero Petroglyphs Museum staff, over 200 new petroglyphs and 5 previously unknown panels with petroglyphs were identifi ed. The identifi cation of new rock carvings was facilitated by the use of photogrammetry method. Within last two decades of years radically changed repertoire of documenting techniques both with the development of computer technology and introducing of digital photography, and with the development of ideas about the data required for documenting of rock art sites. In addition to the petroglyphs themselves (primary data), accurate data on the microrelief of the rock surface (secondary data) are becoming important for documentation. At the moment, photogrammetry has shown its high effi ciency in recording both types of data when studying the Kanozero petroglyphs. This technique opens a new era in documenting of petroglyphs. Different methods of documentation provide different quality of data about petroglyphs. The subjectivity of the methodology consists of research algorithms for collecting and analyzing data and the accuracy of the copying techniques. Contact techniques should be avoided when documenting. The use of high-tech contactless techniques for creating computer 3D-models has simplifi ed the process of documenting and identifying petroglyphs. Some other techniques (paper prints, rubbings) remain relevant for exhibition activities. Any documentation techniques, including photogrammetry, should preferably be rechecked with other techniques. The article describes the possibilities and disadvantages of various contact and non-contact documentation methods tested on the rocks of Kanozero.
