Abstract
This article examines the prehistory of Roman expansion into Transalpine Gaul, identifying its causes and preconditions. The author analyzes the role of Massalia in the Roman advance westward and the consequences of this expansion for the Greek city-state, which remained independent of the Republic until the civil war between Caesar and Pompey. It is concluded that the founding of the province of Transalpine Gaul is directly related to the military weakness of Massalia, its inability to ensure the protection of the roads connecting Rome and the most important Spanish territories.
