Abstract

The almost 900-day blockade of Leningrad clearly demonstrated that the most crucial factor in the development of science and the preservation of the country’s cultural heritage is the individual scientist, the human potential of science. The classic of domestic antiquity studies, Academician Sergey Aleksandrovich Zhebelev (1867–1941), died in the first winter of the blockade from dystrophy. Memoirs of S.A. Zhebelev’s final months of life have been preserved in the personal papers of scientists who managed to survive the blockade years and leave behind testimonies of their experiences.
