Abstract
The article deals with the life and scholarly work of the Leningrad classical scholar Nikolay
Nikolaevich Zalesskiy (1900–1984), whose birth anniversary will be 125 in 2025. Having received
a classical education at the Petrograd/Leningrad State University (1925), N.N. Zalesskiy
worked at the Department of Ancient Greek and Roman History of the Faculty of History of
Leningrad State University from 1934 for 40 years until his retirement in 1975. He was the first
Soviet Etruscologist, as well as the academic supervisor and mentor of a number of renowned
Russian classical historians (A.B. Egorova, Yu.B. Tsirkin, N.S. Shirokova, I.Sh. Shifman, and
others). The scholarly legacy of N.N. Zalesskiy consists of a number of articles and three monographs,
two of which analyze the history and culture of the Etruscans, and the third – the history
of Greek philosophy.
