Abstract
The article deals with the basic principles of developing a typology of profiled amphora fragments (rims, toes, handles) for compiling a catalogue-identification, which is aimed to speed up the process of office processing of bulk materials during field work and to improve the accuracy of identification of single findings. Specifically, the correctness of identifying individual types of profi led parts without taking into account the entire shape of the vessel is questioned. As an illustration, the profile parts of the Heraclean vessels with stamps containing the same names of magistrates or manufacturers are shown. The study of the Mendean amphorae of the “Portichello” variant demonstrates the possibility of identifying the types of rims and toes of the first vessels of this production center of the first half of the 4th century BC. The issue of using visual characteristics of findings clays for their localization and dating is touched upon.
