Abstract

The paper discusses 30 inscriptions on ceramics retrieved during the underwater excavations at the Ak-Burun Bay site in Eastern Crimea. The inscriptions date from the 4th century BC to the 3rd century AD. The authors suggest, based on the nature of the abbreviations and the placement of the letters, that they primarily represent owner signatures. These inscriptions on inexpensive tableware and kitchenware were made by residents of the port area of Panticapaeum and by sailors who remained for some time in the port of the Bosporan capital. The wide chronological range of the finds is explained by the fact that the ceramics from the excavations at Cape Ak-Burun represent waste from the port of Panticapaeum dating back to ancient times. A significant layer of sediment, along with ancient materials from Kerch Bay, was moved to Ak- Burun Bay in the 1970s for deepening purposes.
