Abstract

In 2010–2011, the site of the birital burial ground of the second half of the 9th to the first half of the 10th century was investigated at the Varnavinskoye-2 settlement, the Kuban region. The paper examines a group of cremation burials in funeral urns – kitchen and container pots. Three of them contain the ashes of male warriors buried with weapon and horse equipment. The ashes of a woman or a girl are placed in other pot. We have not been able to determine the gender of the deceased in two burials. The cremation burials of the burial ground of the Varnavinskoye-2 settlement belong to the Kuban-Black Sea Cremation Group, which has a related group of cremation burials in the Podontsovo region. Some scholars associate them with the Kassoges.
