Abstract

The article examines references in the New Testament to navigation and sailors, various types of ships and maritime communications of the Near East. The original ancient Greek terms and names are analyzed and compared with archaeological data. Of all the books of the New Testament, the most information about navigation is contained in the Acts of the Apostles, written by St. Luke, who accompanied the Apostle Paul on his missionary journeys. The writings of the Apostle Luke are distinguished by their artistic style, scholarly manner of presentation and attention to detail, which makes them an important historical source. Particular attention is paid to maritime trade in the 18th chapter of the Revelation of John the Theologian.
