Abstract

The article goals to identify markers that would allow synchronizing the “local” periodizations of eight Late Scythian settlements in the Northwestern Crimea, studied over a wide area. Such markers should have several properties: they should be chronological indicators, be found on several monuments and be mentioned in publications and reports. Earlier, a revision of the attribution and dating of the fi nds was carried out, as well as a new analysis of the information from written sources and related literature. This, in particular, made it possible to establish that for the Late Hellenistic time, the stamps on the handles of Rhodes amphorae can act as synchronization markers, for the Roman time – Black Sea amphorae and their fragments. In addition, the layers of destruction are consistent with the information about confl icts contained in written sources. This makes it possible to clarify a number of dates. The late Scythians occupied the Northwestern Crimea from the last third or quarter of the 2nd century BC to the beginning of the 2nd century AD. At the same time, part of the settlements perished around AD 20. The features of fi xation, excavation reports and publications make it possible to synchronize “local” periodizations only within the framework of three relatively “broad” stages with a length of about 60–90 years. On a number of sites, it is possible to distinguish more “narrow” sub-stages lasting about 20–40 years. The resulting scheme can be used to date those materials whose age cannot be determined more precisely by other methods.
