Abstract
The article focuses on the superword units that characterize the Christian God and his environment in the Old Slavonic manuscripts, which refl ected changes in the way of thinking of the Slavs during the Christianization period. Diffi culties in mastering the new faith were overcome by the Slavs rather calmly, because their way to Orthodoxy was paved by the Slavic first teachers Cyril and Methodius, and in the teachings of Christ there was a lot in common with the traditional pagan beliefs of the Eastern Slavs. Guided by the motto the Lord wants all people to be saved and reach the knowledge of truth, the Solun brothers laid the foundations for the fourth confessional literary language of Europe, which is commonly called Old Church Slavonic in domestic linguistics. Relying on linguistic resources understandable to all Slavs, Cyril and Methodius tested a series of models of word and phrase formation to denote Christian religious and philosophical concepts and cult realities, which became verbalizers of the emerging new concepts that took key positions in the transformed language picture of the world of newly converted Christians. An important place in this specifi c set of language units began to be occupied by the names of Christian idols (the Holy Trinity – God the Father, God the Son and the Holy Spirit), Our Lady – and numerous otherworldly creatures. The analysis of the units used in the manuscripts of the 10th – 11th centuries that have survived to this day, as well as the great amount of set phrases serving as names of the inhabitants of the heavenly kingdom and their opponents, indicate that the Orthodoxy of the Slavs absorbed many features of their former, pagan worldview.
