Abstract
The recent rescheduling of Tarpanchi settlement chronology gave us an option to presume that the fortress was built by Chersonese residents rather than by the Late Scythians. The fortress was set in the late Hellinistic period, nevertheless at the moment one cannot determine the age of the building more precisely. For this reason it is diffi cult to attribute the fortress strictly. The data of publications and reports of A.N. Sheglov (author of the excavations) are insuffi cient for the search of analogs of «initial» defensive walls and towers of Tarpanchi, consequently the article deals with the search of constructions similar to the «pyramidic» belt of the fortress. The review testifi es to the fact that the analogues from Crimean Scythia, Bosporan Kingdom and Peloponnesus are either sporadic or dated more recent. Most of such constructions (from three to fi ve tens) have been discovered at Chersonese chora. They are close to each other both in the features of construction and in the time of building – by various estimates, they predate the Tarpanchi belt or coincide with it. This brings us to the assumption that Tarpanchi «pyramidic» belt and consequently the fortress itself were erected by Chersonese residents. The article also provides a shot review of the opinions on the options of these constructions. The assumption that additional “pyramidic” belts had the option of counterforts (thus providing the increase of towers and walls} seems here the most probable. Obviously, increased highness and thickness of the walls advantaged also the increases in defensive power.
