THE ATHENIAN PRIEST AS A SANCTUARY ADMINISTRATOR

V. S. Lenskaya

The author analyzes the duties of the Athenian priest as a sanctuary curator (maintaining the order and safety of the sanctuary and its property), and considers the differences between polis priests, genos-appointed priests, and priests of various cult associations. She aims to restore the order of changes in the polis temple and comes to the conclusion that they always used to be of a collegial nature. The priest filed a request for repairs to the Council. The Council reviewed the request and transferred it to the Assembly, which selected representatives among the people (and sometimes from the Council or the Areopagus) to observe the process. The author then reviews the priest’s level of participation in the financial and administrative management of the temple during the Classic and the Hellenistic periods. In conclusion, the author raises the question whether it’s possible to regard the Athenian priest as a magistrate and confirms that the «magistrate» concept fully corresponds with the category of polis priests.

ALEXANDER “THE NEW SESONCHOSIS”: EGYPTIAN PROPAGANDIST FICTION OF THE EARLY HELLENISM AND PRECONDITIONS OF ITS ORIGIN

I. A. Ladynin

The comparison of Alexander the Great in some fragments of “The Novel about Alexander” to the legendary Egyptian King Sesonchosis, the great warrior, seems to be a replica of an Egyptian propagandist fi ction: at the beginning of human history, the Egyptians established their dominion over the world, which completed its dispensation, then it passed to other people that violated the norms of the world order, but eventually it had to go back to Egypt (which, according to the “The Novel about Alexander” happened under Alexander — the legal King of Egypt). The components of this fi ction are found in the statements of Dicaearchus of Messena and Pompeius Trogus; and it probably must have emerged in Egypt still before the Hellenism (allegedly, under Tachos in the mid 4th century BC) to become known in the Greek tradition.

A. E. Negin
