Abstract
The article presents an overview of the Bosporan rural settlements from the 1st century BC to the beginning of the 2nd century AD. A revised dating is offered for some types of settlements at the chora and their correlation with political events that took place on the territory of the Bosporan Kingdom during this period.
The appearance of houses-towers throughout the territory of the Bosporus dates back to the second half of the 1st century BC (the reign of Asander). The destruction of the houses-towers of the European Bosporus occurred at the end of the 1st century BC and it is associated with Polemo’s military operations. The end of similar settlements of the Asian Bosporus was linked with the Roman-Bosporan War in the middle of the 1st century BC. The construction of fortresses-“ battereyka” happened during the reign of Aspurgus (the early 1st century AD), and their destruction took place in the fi rst decades of the 2nd century AD. The stages of the existence of multi-layered settlements of the chora of the Bosporan Kingdom are synchronous to the periods of construction and destruction of houses-towers and fortresses: the settlements of Mikhailovka, Semyonovka, Andreevka Severnaya, Novo-Otradnoye, Rayevskoe Fortress, Krasnobatareinoe Settlement.
