Abstract
The considerable success was achieved in studying of the ancient geography of the Taman Peninsula. During the last decade, we have an opportunity to take a new look at the map of the Asian Bosporus, and to understand better the testimony of ancient authors who wrote about the region. At the same time, it is necessary to avoid attempts to reconsider the traditional localization of Greek cities because it is based on the complex analysis of different sources (literary, epigraphic, numismatic and archeological data). According to some modern concepts, in the ancient time, the Taman Peninsula was a large island and it was not divided with two channels (Shimardanskaya and Subbotin Erik) on three islands as it has been considered until recently. The island was separated from the mainland by the channels of the Kuban River (Hypanis-Antikites) and the system of estuaries. The participants of the Russian-German “The Taman project” believe that the water system represented a big sea strait (“the Kuban Bosporus”), which was an analog and a double of the Cimmerian Bosporus at least in the fi rst centuries from the beginning of the Greek colonization. However they seem greatly exaggerate scale and signifi cance of the water body. Reliable localization of the Bosporan cities creates barriers for their attempt to reconcile the reconstruction of ancient landscape offered by them with Strabo’s description of the area (Strabo. XI. 2, 9–10). Therefore, it draws a conclusion that in Strabo’s description because of unsuccessful compilation of different sources the mistake was made.
