Abstract
The article is devoted to the study of the infl uence of the Achaemenid offi cial style on the architecture of northern satrapies of the Empire, providing the representative range of Achaemenid-related monuments. The investigation of main building types (apadana palace, “Khadisha”, entrance gate-propylaea and the tower structures) in Pasargadae, Susa and Persepolis revealed characteristic features of the offi cial Achaemenid architecture, which are implemented in the provincial architecture of the satrapies. These include the hypostyle multicolumn halls, the standardized type of façade-portico, the principle of the strict symmetry in layout, the specifi c order decoration and general planning principles based on the typology of the palaces of Persepolis. The fi rst group represents the synthesis of the offi cial Persian architecture with the local developed building tradition, inherited the achievements of Urartu architecture. The fi rst group includes monuments of the Achaemenid era in Erebuni, Altyn-Tepe, Argishtikhinili and Draskhanakert. Buildings of the second group are remarkable for the direct emulation of the classic examples of the offi cial Achaemenid architecture with the slight infl uence of the local tradition. The second group consists of monuments in Qurban and Ideal Tepe (near Karadzhamirli), Sara Tepe, Gumbati and Samadlo. The article describes the typology, building principles and order forms of provincial monuments in northern regions, as well as examines the characteristic of the synthesis of the Persian offi cial style and local building traditions in both groups.
