Abstract

G. Romme, a French traveler who visited the Crimean Peninsula in 1786, reported (in his unfi nished work “Travelling to the Crimea in 1786”) about a fi nding of Haidar-khan’s tomb (dürbesi). He received this information from his guide, a “learned-Tatar” Mehmed-Aga. A number of researches having taken this information as reliable, suggested that Gaidarkhan, buried in Chufut-Kale plateau, was the son of the fi rst Crimean Khan Haci I Giray, who overthrew his father and ruled for a few months in 1456. Having analyzed different descriptions of the fortress of the 17th – 19th centuries, the authors conclude that there was no tomb of Haidar (Aidar) in Qirk-er. The exploration of the site conducted in 1920-s also didn’t reveal any traces of his tomb. Whether G. Romme misunderstood his guide or his guide was not so educated as he thought to be. The only mausoleum on the site is dürbesi of Dzhanike-khanym, the daughter of Golden Horde khan Tokhtamysh who died in 1437 according to an epitaph. There was a Muslim cemetery around the mausoleum, but all the tombstones there were only carved stone pedestals. Aidar-khan’s ruling in 1456 raises doubts among researches who believe that the specifi ed year was ruled by the other governor.
