HOMINES NOVI: ACCESS TO CONSULSHIP IN THE 1st CENTURY BC.
V. А. Karetnikova
This article examines the dependence of a candidate’s success at consular elections of his nobility status in the Roman Republic of the 1st century BC. The author uses Matthias Gelzer’s understanding of the term “nobilitas”. Though people favored nobility status of candidates, yet this factor taken alone was insufficient to win consular elections. Consular descendants were not the only ones to become consuls. They often lost elections, and such cases cannot be considered exceptional. Noble origin could play an essential role in a candidate‘s success at consular elections only if he had other advantages over his contenders. Therefore the effect of this factor on the outcome of elections should not be overestimated.
Key words: Rome, consulship, consular elections.

Key words: ancient theatre, mimesis, catharsis.
ATHENIAN TRACE IN THEODOSIAN COINAGE
V. L. Strokin
The author assumes that the last third of the 5th century BC saw Theodosia as a member of the First Athenian Sea Union with a new name of Theodeos that became Theodosia again about 395 BC. In 410–405 ВС Theodosia minted silver coins with types of the head of Athena and the head of a bull due to Athenian infl uence. Copper coins were minted up to 393–392 BC. These were of two types: with a bull’s head and a star, and with a male head and a butting bull/ forepart of a bull/a star. A drachm with head of Ares/head of a bull was likely to be minted in 393–392 ВС, when Panticapeum tyrant Satyros I died. This coin brought to the close the most ancient period in Theodosia coinage, as Theodosia was most likely seized by Leukon I, Satyros’ son, about 390 BC.
Key words: Theodosia, coinage, silver coins.

TYPOLOGICAL CLASSIFICATION OF MAYA TERRACOTTA STATUETTES OF THE FIRST MILLENNIUM AD.

That is why the article puts forward an attempt to determine principal working notions of statuette structuring, namely, category, kind, group, and type. Random sample study of 563 units made it possible to single out 12 basic principles of terracotta grouping that together with typological classifi cation give a many-sided characterization of small plastic arts items. The grouping is open, which makes it possible to extend it as terracotta material accumulates, leaving basic principles intact.
Key words: Maya, terracotta statuettes, groups, types, function.
COINS IN INTERTRIBAL TRADE OF THE VOLGA-KAMA REGION
A. V. Bezrukov

The author considers possible reasons for and ways of spreading ancient coins in barbarian communities. There are no grounds to speak about extended money circulation among barbarian tribes of the Volga-Kama region.
Key words: Roman, and Byzantine coins, barbarians, periphery.

Key words: Central Asia, archeology, history, culture.
POSTREFORM EVOLUTION OF LAND OWNING AND LANDED CLASSES STRATIFICATION
V. A. Shapovalov
The article is a study of postreform evolution of land owning and stratifi cation of landed gentry. The interest in the issue stems from the lack of sources on the problem, which makes it impossible to draw a parallel with available post reform land owning statistics. The challenge is associated with different principles underlying the landed class stratification. Throughout prereform period stratifi cation depended upon a number of serfs owned by the landed classes, in post reform period it was based on the seizin. The author comes to the conclusion that post reform period was characterized by a dramatic reduction of landed property. The increase of landed property by the 20th century was characteristic only of some groups and subgroups.
Key words: the landed classes, landed property.

ON A VERSE BY LOMONOSOV
Т. Ye. Abramzon
This is a study of a curious antithesis in famous “Notes on the Advantages of Glass” by M. V. Lomonosov. Glass, the object of poetic exaltation, is set by Lomonosov against Happiness. The verse, incorporated into the context of Western culture, leads to the following conclusion: preference for Glass instead of fragile false happiness symbolizes supremacy of the material world over the ideal world, of pragmatism over abstraction, of permanence over changeability, of truth over falsehood. The image evolved from a mixture of antique and European eudemonic concepts.
Key words: Enlightenment, Lomonosov, eudemonism.

Miller (1857), N. L. Pushkarev (1878), A. A. Korinfsky (1897), and N. S. Gumilev (1919). The authors come to the conclusion that despite each translator’s personal reasons to turn to the work by S. T. Coleridge (from proclaiming a need for atonement through suffering to the pursuit of depicting the infi nity of both inner and outer worlds) all of the Russian interpretations are similar in their disregard of increasing individualistic tendencies leading to self-isolation and lonesomeness.
Key words: poetic translation, international literary connections, comparativistics, tradition, literary image.
