BARBARIANS OF THE NORTHERN BLACK SEA REGION IN THE FIGHT BETWEEN CONSTANTINE AND LICINIUS

S. V. Yartsev

The article deals with a complex issue concerning the role of barbarians in the fight between Constantine and Licinius. The advanced historical reconstruction of events in an orderly sequence makes it possible to mark out that facts established from various written sources directly or obliquely bear evidence of barbarians’ participation in the rivalry between two august personages. The major events are the attack of Rausimodus’ sauromatians on Constantine’s possessions in AD 322 and the attack of Goths in AD 323. One way or another, the latter might be connected with underhand intrigues of Licinius. For all that, Ravsimod fi rst march to the empire’s boundaries might have had nothing to do with internal confl icts of the Roman Empire. It was most probably one of the last attempts of the barbarians to launch a raid with the help of Bosporus fleet. The paper correlates subsequent events – Licinius’s defeat and his captivity, his mutiny against Constantine in AD 325 in which he relied on faithful Goths – with the contents of the second plot of chapter 53 of Constantine VII (Porphyrogenitus, «the Purple-born» ) De Administrando Imperio («On the governance of the Empire»).

CONSPIRACY OF ROSOMONES (JORDAN AND GERMANIC EPIC TRADITION)

I. V. Zinkovskaya

The article deals with the conspiracy of Rosomanus who were mentioned only once by Jordanes, a Gothic historian (Get. 129–130). The author proposes to change the line of research and recant overt or covert ethnocentrism while trying to solve Rosomanus problem. German epic tradition claims that king Ermanarich was killed by his servitors, which directed the author’s attention to the fact that the lexicon of Ulfi las Gothic Bible of the 4th c. had both the word manna — man, and the word rohsns = ancient Greek ???? (royal court). It is important to note that the word was also used by the Ostrogoths as its derivative *razna persisted in the vocabulary of Crimean Goths till the later period of the Middle Ages. Thus Gothic *rohsnimans (Lat. rosomoni) might mean men of the court, courtiers. In such a situation Sar and Ammiy, crafty Rosomoni brothers from Jordanes story are just servitors, attendants from Ermanarich’s suite and not an ethnos conquered by the king that historians and archeologists had unsuccessfully tried to fi nd for a long time.

Key words: Jordanes, Getica.

CONSPIRACY AGAINST EMPTINESS (FIGHT WITH NON-BEING IN O. MANDELSHTAM’S “STONE”)

V. S. Sevastyanova

The late 1900-s saw a thorough critical analysis of the ideals and values that Russian society and culture had lived by. The blow fell on moral, cultural and philosophical world outlook of symbolist artists, chimerical nature of the culture that sprung at the intersection of incompatible worlds. It was the poets of a new generation that were the fi rst to realize the danger lurking in the deeds of the authors that were unable to distinguish between dark and light, God and devil, one’s own volition and that of the primordial source. O.Mandelshtam was the fi rst to speak about the turn to being; thus he formulated his anti-symbolic theses and in his early poems set up a program of essentially opposing world image disembodiment. But from the very start of his opposition to emptiness there appeared many signs showing that a conspirator against non-being did not seem so utterly devoted to the declared ideas as one might expect him to.
