PALEOANTHROPOLOGICAL DATA OF LATE BRONZE AGE FINAL PERIOD FROM FOREST-STEPPE POVOLZHYE

Anthropological literature contains rather scarce data on the physique of representatives of Late Bronze Age final period cultures in the steppes and forest-steppes of Eastern Europe, Zauralye, and Western Kazakhstan. The article deals with the material obtained in Volgo-Uralye forest-steppe area, which belongs to Suskanskaya and Ivanovskaya cultures. Craniological complexes are singled out to make it possible to determine distinct analogies and within certain limits to refer them to one or other archaeological culture. The hypothesis is that Suskansk traditions origin could be connected with Zauralye Alakul timberwork groups who were familiar with Andronovskaya cultures. These groups might perceive cultural novelties and then introduce them into native environment of Volgo-Uralye and western areas.

IMPERIAL ARCHEOLOGICAL COMMISSION AND HOME ARCHEOLOGICAL FIELDWORK

The author of the article draws the conclusion that the principal contribution of the Imperial Archeological Commission to the archeological fieldwork resides in the necessity to recognize centralized regulation, to consistently pursue and promote setting it up since 1889. Such an order proved necessary and viable, which is confirmed by the fact that it did not disappear with the Soviet power, but developed and strengthened. It resulted in a carte blanche system that helped to preserve archeological legacy of Russia.

SOPHISTS AND BISHOPS IN RHETORICAL SCHOOL OF EARLY BYZANTINE GAZA

The article investigates rhetorical school of Palestinian Gaza of the late 5th — the first half of the 6th century. It is based on the data of the survived texts by Gaza Christian sophists, namely Aeneas, Procopius, Chorikos. It also reveals common historical situation concerning the relationship between Christians and Heathens in the city, between sophists and bishops, and between ancient and Christian traditions, which in the long run brought forth early Byzantine culture.

DEFECTORS ISSUE IN RUSSIAN-SWEDISH RELATIONS: FROM STOLBOVO PEACE TREATY TO KARDIS (BASED ON THE ARCHIVES OF SAINT PETERSBURG INSTITUTE OF HISTORY, RUSSIAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCE)

The article considers an important issue concerning relations between Russia and Sweden during a spell between two peace treaties concluded in Stolbovo and Kadis, namely the defectors issue. Basing his research on the material provided by Saint Petersburg Institute of History (Russian Academy of Science) the author makes an attempt to find out what caused the defectors problem and how Russian and Swedish diplomats tackled it. The author concludes that the solution of the problem depended on mutual efforts of both Russian and Swedish authorities, what with close contacts of frontiersmen interfering with it, though both governments badly needed their loyalty.

LEGAL FUNCTIONS OF IVAN SAMOYLOVICH (1672–1687), LEFT-BANK UKRAINE HETMAN

The article deals with legal functions of Left-Bank Ukraine head in the time of hetman Ivan Samoylovich (1672-1687). The author comes to recognize that hetman had rather ample legal power during the period, which is indicative of considerable autonomy of Ukrainian legal system under hetman Samoylovich.
The author also points out that Moscow interference concerned only politically most significant cases. But the hetman supplied Moscow with information concerning almost all court issues, which allowed the central power to curb the strengthening either of petty officers or of the hetman, and to avoid dissatisfaction of both Ukrainian nobility and broad masses of Cossacks, townsmen, and peasants.

PERM GUBERNIA PEASANT HOMESTEAD POPULATION STRUCTURE (BASED ON ZEMSTVO CENSUS DATA FROM THE LATE 19th TO THE EARLY 20th CENTURY)

The paper presents the analysis of statistical information concerning zemstvo household censuses. It examines age and gender structure of peasant household population, and the ratio of able-bodied and non-able-bodied population. Extensive data show relative stability of Perm Gubernia peasant population composition from the late 19th c. to the early 20th c. The author reveals the dependence of a household economic state on its structure, which is determined by the current state of the family life cycle. The paper also examines factors influencing literacy level and the academic motivation of the peasant population.

ABREKS AND EXPERIENCE OF FIGHTING AGAINST THEM IN THE NORTH-EAST CAUCASUS AT THE BEGINNING OF THE 20th CENTURY

The article deals with the problems of security and abrek determent in the North-East Caucasus at the beginning of the 20th century. Abreks (from an Ossetian word abrag) were mobile mounted guerilla units. Long and successful guerilla movement in the North-East Caucasus at the beginning of the 20th century was mostly due to the considerable support of the local population, primarily Vainakhs (Chechen and Ingush). The article dwells upon the role of abrek phenomenon in the eastern part of Tersk oblast.

THE CHILD BASIS AND PRINCE MYSHKIN IN THE LITERARY WORLD OF DOSTOYEVSKY'S "IDIOT"

The article reveals the notion of 'the child basis' in the context of the literary world of F. Dostoyevsky's novel 'Idiot' with the principal role of Prince Myshkin. Other characters of the novel are also treated on the 'child basis', which as a philosophical and religious category represents a criterion of pure and sincere human nature.

TWO WORLDS IN HEINRICH BOLL'S NOVEL "HOUSE WITHOUT GUARDIANS"

The article, based on the novel "House without Guardians" by Heinrich Boll, the West Germany writer of the 20th century, deals with the principal objects of his creative work. These comprise a stark contrast between the rich and the poor, the problem of the national guilt and liability for fascists' evil deeds, and temporal duality that ensures fuller comprehension of the present through the awareness of the past. The article also develops the anti-war theme, the basic one of Heinrich Boll's works, which is brilliantly dealt with in "House without Guardians". All of these aspects are revealed through the fate of the characters whose lives with the military stamp of the past is depicted in two worlds.

ITALIAN MOTIFS IN THE WORKS OF HENRY JAMES AND I.S. TURGЕNEW

The article is devoted to Italian reminiscences and motifs in the life аnd work of Неnry James (1843-1916) and his older contetnporary and friend I.S. Turgenev. Apart from Veanicе (the city of "faded glory") the images of Italy and its culture found their way into the narratives of the two novelists. The rendering of' Italian themes once again enables to reveal common textual and thematic models in the works of these otherwise idiosyncratic authors.

GENERAL PRINCIPLES OF COMPILING ENCYCLOPEDIC DICTIONARY OF BIBLICAL SET PHRASES

Nowadays Biblical units catch interest both of humanitarian scholars and Russian-speaking people at large. One of the primary tasks is to make Biblical phrases well-known and popular, which entails quicker dictionary compiling process. There is a vital necessity to compile a new, comprehensive encyclopedia of Biblical phraseology. Such a dictionary includes recurrent Biblical set expressions that are expressive, emotional and evaluative, and have figurative meaning. Its primary goal is to supply each Biblical phrase with detailed information, linguistic one first and foremost.

IMAGERY CATEGORY IN OLD RUSSIAN

The article considers imagery category in Old Russian as an independent lexico-semantic category reflecting general properties of lexical units. Lexico-semantic category is defined either as a unilateral semantic category or as a bilateral category with a plane of content and a plane of expression. Old Russian imagery category was bilateral. The plane of content was characterized by semantic duality and motivated meaning. The plane of expression presented the inner form of a word. Semantic duality and morpho-semantic structure of a word allowed imagery functioning in Old Russia.

DATIVE, INSTRUMENTAL AND PREPOSITIONAL (LOCATIVE) NOUN PLURAL IN THE 17th C. INVENTORY BOOKS OF PSKOV-PECHORY MONASTERY

Old forms (37 lexical units out of 45) were dominant in Pskov regionalism of the 17th c. Nouns in instrumental plural tend to retain old inflections; on the other hand, there is an unusual influence of masculine and neuter nouns with *-a stem. It proves the ability of nouns of different stems to acquire new forms.
New dative and prepositional plural noun inflections were advanced by generalization of the inflectional vowel [a]: formerly nouns in the nominative and accusative plural had inflection - a.
17th c. documents (inventory books of Pskov-Pechory Monastery) recording Pskov regionalism give an insight into Russian language norm formation.

SET PHRASES IN SOUTH-URAL LAND SURVEYORS LOGBOOKS OF THE LATE 18th — EARLY 19th CC

SET EXPRESSION WITH THE COMPONENT "ROSE" IN RUSSIAN LYRICS (BASED ON V. KHODASEVICH)

In poetic speech the lexeme "rose" possesses a high phrase-making potential and is widely used as a symbolic basis for various phraseological semes. In V.Khodasevich's poetry set expressions with the component "rose" designate such abstract notions as love, human soul, old age, grief, Pushkin's poetic tradition, innermost ideas and dreams, reflections, death, and also poetic human names. Their special value for V.Khodasevich's world image lies in verbalization of basic concepts "love" and "death".

"REAL WORLD" TEXT MODELING (BASED ON HYPERBOLIC MEANING OF ADJECTIVES)

The article considers "real world" text modeling by the example of gradual-hyperbolic meaning of adjectives in lexico-grammatical and phraseological aspects. The basic means of hyperbolic expression in associative fields is the adjective with its special forms of comparison degrees. Affixation as gradation building means is also productive and is quite frequent among qualitative adjectives and adverbs. Fixed phrases with such connotative components as emotional, evaluative, and expressive also appear among hyperbolization means. The paper describes fixed phrases with spatial, temporal, and quantitative meaning expressed by nominal constructions, which participate in building up hyperbole.

PHRASEOLOGICAL PHANTOMS

As phraseological subsystem of language is dynamic and has its core and periphery, along-side typical units there are ones with less pronounced features. The author gave such units a figurative name of "phraseological phantoms". They are quite often confused by researchers and dictionary compilers with true phraseological units due to their amorphous and ambiguous character.

PUNCTUATION EXPRESSIVE FUNCTION IN CONJOINT CONSTRUCTIONS

The article deals with punctuation function as an important means of text arrangement, of text parts interconnection, of text expressiveness. Previously punctuation was regarded from the grammatical-form viewpoint, now the approach is different. Punctuation marks more often than not have an expressive function; hence their two principal functions are notional and expressive.

FROM COMPARISON TO IDIOM

The article is based on the assumption that comparison, as one of the principal properties of human cognition linking previous experience with the new one, can be regarded as the basis for designating new notions and respectively for the formation of new linguistic units. Ellipsis of comparative units is presented as a formal mechanism giving rise to different types of metaphoric units (idioms).

DAY OF RUSSIA IN THE NEWSPAPER KALEIDOSCOPE OF PHRASEOLOGICAL IMAGES

Set phrases recurrent in contemporary home periodicals present a peculiar segment of modern Russia phraseological world image. The author describes an attempt to investigate the problem by showing that modern newspaper analysis from the viewpoint of set phrase usage allows to capture the state of social health in modern Russia. Set phrases serve as a means of displaying the crisis in Russia of today. The author thinks that the experience of compiling a new type phraseological dictionary together with A.V. Zhukov is a great help in solving the problem. The research is based on quotations with set phrases from contemporary high quality periodicals.

LEXICO-SEMANTIC CATEGORY OF ABSTRACT ACTION IN WORD FAMILIES WITHIN A SEMANTIC FIELD "HEALTH RECOVERY" OF EASTERN SLAVIC LANGUAGES

Grouping members of a word family into grammatical and lexico-semantic classes is determined by a formal semantic language unit, namely, a derivational field. One of key lexico-semantic noun categories is the category of abstract (conceptual) action. Comparative analysis of a lexico-semantic group of nouns of the kind from a microfield "health recovery" in Eastern Slavic languages allows to trace semantic evolution of the given category and to reveal the most productive word-building models.

BILINGUAL DISCOURSE AND TWO COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS

What with language interference, spelling mistakes are not the only ones that crop up in bilinguals' writing. The article treats written speech errors of social and cultural character in terms of cross cultural communication. The term "a social and cultural error" implies all written speech drawbacks that appear due to dissimilar social and cultural perception of the world (for example, Russians learning the English language). Social and cultural errors are of several types, which give away a foreigner's writing. "Written speech accent" becomes more marked in translations from Russian into English, official documents, compositions, etc.

The article describes a system of image prototypes in Swedish fixed comparisons characterizing human beings from different angles: thematic prototypes, prototype employment on the basis of comparison base, on motivated / non-motivated prototype choice, on language means underlying imagery of a fixed comparison. The article contains analysis of national and cultural features of Swedish fixed comparisons both in plane of expression and in plane of content.

AXIOLOGICAL PORTRAIT OF A WOMAN THROUGH ITALIAN AND RUSSIAN PAREMIAS (IN SEARCH OF AN EVALUATION SUBJECT)

Human factor finds manifold expression in building up axiological world image. Gender factor of the evaluation subject can appear relevant for evaluative definitions and is revealed through semantic, syntactic and pragmatic aspects of paremias. Their register factor, as the key one for their usage, accounts for the accent shift from the positive to the negative.
Axiological portrait of a woman through Italian and Russian paremias despite negative evaluation in the majority of definitions allows to see that, on the one hand, paremias are viable due to universal human values they proclaim, and, on the other hand, male unity in estimating female half of the humankind is not groundless, what with a considerable amount of identical qualifications.

METAPHORS IN POLITICAL LEADERS SPEECH (MOVEMENT METAPHORS USED BY US PRESIDENT BARAK OBAMA)

The article deals with specific functions of metaphor in political leaders' speech. Analysis of movement metaphors recurrence in the speech of Barak Obama, US President, gives a vivid example of metaphors making political speech not only more lively and expressive, but also presenting an effective tool for modifying political world image in addressees minds.

DEMOGRAPHIC POTENTIAL OF NORTH ALTAI FOOTHILL NATIVES (19th — EARLY 21st CC.)

The paper is an attempt to appraise North Altai ethnic groups (Kumandin, Chekan, Tubular) migration during the 19th — early 21st cc. period. A wide variety of sources allows the author to conclude that the demographic situation in North Altai of the indicated period was determined by the natives contacts with Russians and by a wide spread of Christianity. Natural migration of autochthonous population in the 20th century was due to a change in traditional demographic behavior patterns and to mass exodus from the habitat. Notwithstanding complicated social and economic conditions of the 20th c., North Altai ethnic minorities managed to retain considerable demographic potential.

FACTORS AFFECTING YAMAL NENETS POPULATION IN THE 20th — EARLY 21st CC.

The 20th century gives evidence of ethno-demographic stability of Nenets population in Yamal-Nenets autonomy. Government measures, mainly better medical care, had a beneficial effect on the peoples of the North. Population growth considerably dropped during the late 40s — early 50s, in the 70s, and in the late 90s. Higher absolute population growth can be attributed to a large number of Nenets people in Yamal, their close-knit community in the small area with a traditionally nomadic way of life.

MORDVINIANS OF THE ALTAI TERRITORY: 20th C. ETHNO-DEMOGRAPHIC DYNAMICS

The paper is based on the analysis of census results in Russia of the late 19th — 20th cc. and on present day statistical data. The author comes to recognize that ethno-demographic development of the Altai territory Mordovians was determined by social and economic processes common to Soviet Russia. The principal tendency involved reduced total ethnic population, its comparable size, assimilation degree, language loss, and identification change. The author regards decreased ethnic diversity of Altai territory as a negative factor in human potential development.

MIGRATION FROM CENTRAL ASIA TO ALTAI TERRITORY REGION DEVELOPMENT PROSPECTS

This is a general assessment of migration situation in Altai territory of the Russian Federation. In his analysis of emigration and immigration streams in borderland the author relies upon official statistics and fieldwork results. The largest bulk of immigrants to Altai territory is from Kazakhstan. The author regards Russian migrants from Kazakhstan and Central Asia in general as an important potential factor in replenishing population of the area. While recognizing the migrant labor necessity the author points out that it aggravates social contradictions and creates problems for migrant integration in Russian society.

ETHNO-SOCIAL ASPECTS OF HUMAN POTENTIAL EVALUATION IN SIBERIAN FEDERAL AREA

This is a survey paper dealing with ethnodemes of population graphic and ethno-social characteristics in relation to development prospects of the polyethnic area. Official statistics data analysis reveals ethno-demographic and ethno-social tendencies for a present-day federal area, which lie in reduced population of the nation and ethnic groups that cannot be compensated by migration. Other tendencies comprise diasporas lower demographic characteristics as to average estimate, retaining ethno-political hierarchy together with political, cultural and integration factors, worse qualitative characteristics of the area population, and ensuing tougher competitive labor market also involving ethnicity factoes. The study prospects are determined by these tendencies together with ways and means of employing, preserving, and developing human potential of different population groups in Siberia with regard to potential demographic, social, and ethnic hazards.

TOMSK OBLAST SELKUPS NATIVE SIBERIAN ETHNIC MINORITIES POTENTIAL

The paper presents results of a pilot project on human potential of Selkups in Tomsk oblast of Russia. The analysis of a number of sources allows the authors to come to the conclusion that many low living-standards of Selkups are characteristic of all Russian people. Thus, means and ways of improving living standards of Selkups and of all peoples of Russia are alike. Yet, the pressing need for native minorities' self-government entails novel decisions. Of prime importance is direct participation of ethnic groups' representatives in designing and implementing programs of territories development.

ISSUES CONCERNING SIBERIAN NATIVE ETHNIC GROUPS STEADY DEVELOPMENT. TRADITIONAL LIFE-SUPPORT SYSTEMS

The paper deals with academic material for a political course "Concepts of Steady Development of Russian Federation North, Siberia, and Far East Native Ethnic Minorities". This study focuses on Sayan-Altai ecoregion with its specific native ethnic adaptation mechanism. The study aims at working out recommendations for improving and modernizing traditional economic activities of ethnic minorities, which goes hand in hand with improving ethnic minorities' standard of living and bringing it up to the average level in Russia. Human potential quality becomes one of the principal criteria for target programs aimed at native ethnics. Such programs are developed on federal, regional, and municipal levels.

SIBERIAN GERMANS: SOCIAL ADAPTATION IN THE CONTEXT OF MIGRATION PROCESSES

The author traces the fate of Siberian Germans in the context of migration processes by the example of Orlovka, a North Kulunda village. .Siberian Germans established patterns of effective economic and cultural adaptation despite all historic ups and downs of the 20th century, and they could boast their demographic and cultural well-being up to the late 1980-s inclusive. Post Soviet social and political changes of the 90-s saw nearly all native inhabitants (about 400 people) leave Orlovka. They were replaced by German transmigrators from Kazakhstan. Qualitative change of the human potential of the region Germans was caused by inadequate home interethnic integration policy and ineffective rehabilitation programs. The way to cope with the situation lies in due expert support, open discussion, and clear-cut aims of Russian-German humanitarian initiatives.

HUMAN POTENTIAL CHARACTERISTICS OF IMMIGRATION TO SIBERIA FROM ASIA

The paper is based on the analysis of official statistics data and on fieldwork polling. It deals with total characteristics of labor migrants from Central and South-East Asia to Siberia. The author groups migrants according to their human characteristics, migration and labor intentions. Total poll results revealed that 59.6% of immigrants intend to keep on working in Russia. Analyzing migration prospects in the context of promising steady development of the region the authors highlight ambiguous human stock evaluation of foreign workers on Siberian labor market.

ETHNIC IDENTITY AND VALUE SYSTEM OF URBAN YOUTH IN SIBERIA (BASED ON THE YOUTH OF KHMAO-YUGRA DISTRICT OF SURGUT)

The author introduces materials of the poll among the youth of Khmao-Yugra district of Surgut. Data analysis concerning most important social values (family, marriage, work, patriotism) correlates with ethnic diversity of the youth. The results of the analysis make it possible to appraise the prospects of human potential realization and to predict its development in the near future.

ETYMOLOGY OF THE TERMS TOLERANCE AND INDULGENCE (ALTERNATIVE VALUE CONTENT)

The article deals with alternative value content of such notions as tolerance and indulgence. Comparative analysis of content value of both notions points to the necessity of a well weighted approach to their study, treatment, and usage. Due to the principal difference in the etymology of these two terms it is impossible to regard tolerance as an optimal means for regulation concerning relations between the state and the church, between different religions, and between different ethnic groups in Russia. The author suggests the term indulgence as the one more acceptable in its social and cultural meaning.
