EVOLUTION OF THE ROMAN PRAETORS' MAGISTRACY (367–122 BC)
O.A. Vlasova
The article shows series of the praeture evolution during 3rd – 2nd centuries BC. There have been analysed and considered stages of development within the magistracy and character of its changes. The year 122 BC is regarded to be the turning point of Roman praetorian history. First, the praetors' magistracy could not develop any more in the same way as far as it responded to the territorial growth of the state with the increase in praetors number. Second, for the first time the praetor received a purely judicial province, a constant court of blackmail cases. The further evolution of pretors' magistracy differs sharply from its development in 367–122 BC.
SACRAL VIEWS OF ROMAN WARRIORS FROM THE WESTERN PART OF THE EMPIRE
N.I. Solovjanov
The author analysed the dedications to emperors and main deities of the Roman panteon, Celtic Gods and German deity Vagdaver. The most unusual things are two Christian gravestones of the 3rd century from Spain. They don't have analogy in the other regions of the Empire, because the Christians didn't serve in the Roman army until the 4th century A.D.
GALLIEN AND THE SENATE
Yu.B. Tsirkin
The Gallien Code edition expedited the process of senators' replacement off the real management of the army and provinces. There was only quite a small range of the civil posts left for senators which were rather minor in conditions of the increasing militarization of the empire. The senate still kept the authority as an embodiment of the Roman statehood, but this authority rested mainly only on tradition, and the senate had no more influence in the army. Thus, there had been made another big step from principatus to dominantus. Officially senators were the supreme estate but the real authority belonged to military — bureaucratic elite. Gallien's reform came to be a decisive step in such a situation.

I.I. Vdovichenko, G.M. Nikolaenko
The painted pottery of late Classical and Hellenistic time was found on the chora of Chersones Tauric. It characterizes family life and cultural traditions of the population, supposedly the Greek one or the one which was very much alike. The earliest samples could be dated to the end of the 5th — the beginning of the 4th c. BC — the late ones — by the turn of the 2nd — 1st centuries BC. It allows to speak about life stability of the chora as far as its Golden age can be dated to the second half of the 4th — 3rd centuries BC.

Statistical processing of field and archival materials revealed the portion of the handmade ceramics in relation to other categories, and its place and role in general characteristic of a ceramic complex in settlements of a distant chora in the European Bosporus.
A BOSPORAN RELIEF WITH A BATTLE SCENE: THE SCYTHIANS OR THE AMAZONS?
L.L. Selivanova
This article re-examines a famous relief (dated to the 4th century BC or later) found on the site «Yubileynoe I» on the Taman peninsula (Krasnodar territory, Temryuk region) during the excavations in 1983-1990. It was discovered in a building from the 1st century BC — the 1st century AD and has been preserved in the A.S. Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow. The author bases her conclusion on a comparative analysis of the relief's details, with reference to Greek literary and artistic parallels. In her opinion, the relief was made by a local craftsman well-versed in both Greek mythology and local mythological traditions. The choice of the theme, in which the Scythians and the Amazons played the main (and positive) roles, might reveal the purpose of the image as urging the resident Greeks and the locals to maintain civic peace. The author of the article, therefore, suggests that the relief was made for a local temple, or a Heroon, which venerated patron deities of the city. The stonecutter depicted a tale, quite popular among the multi-ethnic Bosporan population (see Herodotus 5.110-117), about the origins of the Sarmatians and the first encounter of the Scythians with the Amazons, i.e. when the Scythians did not yet know that the Amazons were women.
COINS WITH THE LEGEND NYN: CHRONOLOGY OF THE COINAGE
V.L. Strokin
The author casts doubt on validity of a traditional view on the Athenian monetary decree (IG. Ii. 1453), placing emphasis to the fact that this document had not been directed on monopolization of silver coinage in the First Athenian Sea union. But the decree had the overall objective of distribution the attic monetary-metrological standard among all its members. Therefore it is necessary to search for traces of implementing this law into effect not in the hold up of a mint or any union center, but in the move of the production into the attic monetary standard. The author thinks that the law was not applied to Nymphaem because of a specific military-political and economic situation. Coinage with a legend NYN was carried out in about 435–425 ВС and stopped in first years of Peloponnession war in connection with the increase of the taxation and toughening free bread trade. These reasons brought to the end the inflow of non-standard import silver which served as raw monetary material in Nymphaeum.

O.V. Maan
During the antique and the early Middle Age periods the territory of the South-East Abkhazia belonged to the area of Apcilia ancient political formation, occupying the central and east part of modern Abkhazia in the 1st — 8th centuries. The conclusion is made during the antique period the left bank of Codor and the Skurchinsky bight areas were originally populated territories. It proves to be true by the fact that all archaic settlements known in Kodor deltas, are located only on the left bank of the river; there are no antique settlements fixed on the right bank of Kodor.

A.V. Epimakhov

The system of the social relations looks quite contradictory due to distinctions in the models of burial rites. There are two groups of explanations to this contradiction. According to the first there were real changes of social structure. According to the second one the key ideas determined the shape of a burial site and demonstration of the social status had varied during the period.
NOMADIC CIVILIZATION OF EURASIA
S.G. Botalov
The article is devoted to studying and developing the notion of the "nomadic civilization of Eurasia" (NCE). Laying ground for main definitions of this notion the author came to the conclusion that the nomadic civilization of Eurasia is a society with the productive form of economy, developed ideology that is able to stimulate its steady growth and development as well as effective functioning and reproduction of the social and cultural system. This kind of social and cultural system, in its turn, can support a high degree of mobility, communicative and adaptation skills of the community. The nomadic civilization of Eurasia is also characterized by the urban culture developed to a certain degree as well as the fully formed and widely spread among the main social groups and layers tradition of writing. The main stages of its development took place within the borders of the Eurasian steppe territory and the neighbouring submountain, highland, forest-steppe and semi-deserted oasis areas.
The main historical stages of the NCE development could most probably be presented in the following way:
1st stage (7th – 6th centuries BC — 1st – 3rd centuries AD) of the proto nomadic civilizations when the constituent features were formed and NCE appeared as a continental system during the ancient nomadic period.
2nd stage (4th – 8th — 13th – 14th centuries) actually witnessed the appearance and further development of the NCE. It took place between the Xiong-nu-Hun and the early Turkic period which was the time of the first Nomadic Empires and the appearance of the nomadic city as a phenomenon. This is the period when all the displacements within the macro and micro regions of the Eurasian steppe and bordering areas were all more or less arranged or interconnected.
3rd stage (15th – 17th centuries) was marked by the decay of the system's foundational structural elements, the geo-cultural localization and the insulation of nomadic societies, multiple sporadic migrations and displacements within micro and macro regions. The system of political, cultural and trade migrations was destroyed at this stage.

V.P. Kostyukov

D.V. Bobylev
The article deals with the role of military schools in the Cossack officer staff training in second half of the 19th century. In particular, process of formation and development of these military schools is under consideration. At the first stage cadet schools were the unique supplier of the qualified and educated officers to the Cossack troops. At the second stage, after D.A.Milyutin's reform their role was limited to youth training for military and junker schools, thus they have changed the name for military grammar schools. CLASS CHARACTERISTIC OF JACOB BYOME'S LITERARY-PHILOSOPHICAL HERITAGE
S.M. Shaulov
The article is devoted to an original feature of German theosophist Jacob Byome (1575–1624). A frontier character of his works is beyond the frameworks of any habitual specific classification. The philosophical contents and art specificity of his heritage were discussed within the framework of variuos discourses. Poetics' and philosophical syncretism of Byome's works results from a single messianic aim in which various intentions: experience of revelation, intellectual gambling and suggestive-salutary demands from the reader — are united by a constantly present in the text, reflective and self-expressive author's ego.
