Abstract

The article focuses on a problem of perception of the church politics and views of Pope Leo the Great (pontiff in 440–461) refl ected in the East and South Slavonic written sources of the 12th – 17th centuries. The veneration of Pope Leo in the Byzantine Empire as well as in the Slavic lands was based on the fact that his main theological work had been crucial to the overthrow of the doctrinal supremacy of monophysitism, and became a part of acts accepted by the Fourth Ecumenical Council in Chalcedon (451). The works of Byzantine hymnography are very noteworthy among the various historical sources that characterize the veneration of Pope Leo in the Orthodox tradition. The Greek Offi ce Menaion for February include the glorifi cation of the memory of the Roman pontiff as «the leader of Orthodoxy», prominent «successor of St. Peter», and even as «the second Moses». The translation of this hymnographic work from Greek into Slavonic became known in Rus not later than the 12th century. As shown by studies of the Slavonic manuscripts in the libraries and archives of Bulgaria and Serbia, the text of this church service including the glorifi cation of Pope Leo began to spread in the South Slavic lands not later than the end of the 13th – early 14th century. However the wide disseminated text of the Orthodox service dedicated to the glorifying of Pope Leo in Greek, Eastern and South Slavonic manuscripts of the Offi ce Menaion is in many respects in line with his doctrine about the Roman primacy over the other centers of the Christian world. This circumstance likely was the reason for preservation of the pro-Roman scholia in some Eastern Slavonic manuscripts of Kormchaia (Πηδάλιον).
