Abstract
The article examines the issue of the right of Roman centurions to legal marriage. Based on epigraphic data and legal sources, the social and demographic aspects of these officers' families are studied to identify signs of their legal recognition or its absence. It is established that many centurions' families are distinguished by high social status and appear to be legally recognized. At the same time, a general rarity of marriage among centurions and their late marital age are revealed. Taking into account the ambiguity of the evidence, a cautious conclusion is made that centurions gained the right to formalize a legal marriage upon reaching the term of service required for honourable discharge.
