Abstract
The Praetorian Guard, which Augustus turned into a permanent institution, was the most important part of the military garrison of Rome, which, in addition to it, also included urban cohorts, vigiles and some other highly specialized (mainly reconnaissance) services. The article examines, on the one hand, such technical aspects of the praetorians' stay in the capital as the organization of guard duty, the routes of movement of detachments around the city, and, on the other hand, the impact of the military presence on local residents, their interaction within the urban space, both in domestic and political terms.
