Abstract

The article studies an inscription found in Amastris (Marek, Kat. Amastris 95), which mentions a representative of the local elite, Marcus Aurelius Alexander, as high priest of Pontus (ἀρχιερεὺς τοῦ Πόντου), as well as Bithynarch and Pontarch (Βειθυνιάρχης καὶ Ποντάρχης), which called into question the so-called "identification theory" that equates high priests and koinarchs. An analysis of sources found in the territory of the province of Bithynia-Pontus led to the conclusion that the formulation "Bithynarch and Pontarch" was established over a long period and denoted an official who simultaneously performed his duties as head of the koinon of Bithynia and the koinon of the cities of Pontus in Nicomedia. The title "ἀρχιερεὺς τοῦ Πόντου" should be attributed to the time of Marcus Aurelius Alexander's service in Amastris. It is argued that, using both titles designating the leader of the koinon of the cities of Pontus, the author of the inscription sought to avoid repetition and confusion.
