Abstract

The аuthors analyze the contribution of various scholars to the study of the images of the Modern era on the rock art sites of the Middle Yenisei. In this region, rock carvings from this period correlate with the Khakass population and are reasonably identifi ed and attributed relatively recently. However, the fi rst mentions of later images are found in the descriptions of specialists, starting from the 18th century. Given the degree of scientifi c interest shown to this pictorial layer, the history of their study can be divided into three periods. The fi rst one lasted from the 18th century to the beginning of the 20th century and it is characterized by the accumulation of materials. The second period covers a signifi cant part of the 20th century and is marked not only by the further formation of the source study base, but also by the publication of special works devoted to its analysis and attribution. In the third period, from the 1990s to the present, experts are increasingly paying attention to this layer, which is associated with the need to document all images of the monument and a targeted interest in the rock paintings of this time. Despite the corpus of materials collected to date on the images on the rocks and mounds of the Middle Yenisei, there is not a single publication that analyzes the contribution of specialists, as well as the main milestones in the history of the study of such a specifi c source. The paper fi lls this gap, and the author outlines the main prospects for further research in this direction at the sites of the Middle Yenisei.
