Abstract

The article is dedicated to three private seals from the collection of Pushkin state museum of fi ne arts. The engravings on the matrix show the coats of arms of the Galagan family – originated from the Little Russia at the beginning of the 17th century. These seals are certainly interesting with a historical and artistic point of view. The main purpose of the article is attribution and determination of the date. The fi rst part of article gives the information about the ancestor – Ignatius Galagan. He was a colonel in the army of Peter the Great, and for his military victories and his service the emperor granted him the coat of arms. The elements, engraved on the fi rst side of seal, indicate its belonging to the service man: the kettle-drums, banners, sword – are typical military attributes. The engraving on the coat of arms – centaur. On the other side engraved a monogram “JG”, which indicates the belonging to Ivan Galagan, according to the documents. Ivan Grigorievich Galagan was the ruler of Prilutsky Regiment (Ukraine), than he was promoted as the counselor and judges of the court. He was also among the educated elite of the Cossack Left-Bank Ukraine, he served in the Cossack army, had the honorary title. He also travelled in the Europe and left the diary, which is an artifact of old Ukrainian language.

The next two seals are made of carnelian and probably belonged to brothers Peter and Paul Galagan (mid 19th century), the Senate registrars. Peter Galagan served in the Ministry of Justice, and then in the Ministry of Internal Affairs was the titular counselor and offi cer on special assignments. Pavel Galagan served as honorary ranger of Kozelets district school. We can certainly say, that these seals are made by different masters – the style of carving indicates that. The quality of carving is strongly different – from elegant to quite primitive. Unfortunately, it is not possible to establish the names of masters, who created these two seals.
