Abstract

The authors publish 129 excavation coins from the Site of Vinogradny 7 (nearby Phanagoria) found in 2016. This settlement is located along the ancient road crossing the whole Taman Peninsula, from the Cape Panagia via Phanagoria to the northwestern shore of the Kiziltash Estuary connected with the Black Sea. Over 360 ancient and medieval coins were found, including part of a hoard or purse with Pantikapaion copper coins of the early 3rd century BC.

The largest group consists of 90 Bosporan coins dating from the last third of the 4th century BC to the fi rst third of the 4th century AD. For the Hellenistic period, there is a preponderance of coins of Panticapaeum (69 pieces) and Phanagoria (23 pieces). Nineteen coins came from the Roman period, belonging to the Bosporan Kings from Aspurgus to Rheskuporis VI.

Dating to ca. 120‒110 BC, a silver Phanagorian diobol with Apollo and rose is of great interest, being an important evidence for the political orientation of Phanagoria on Rhodes.

A few Byzantine gold coins and “barbarian” imitations of solidi and silver were recovered among grave goods in the burials. They are Roman IV Diogenes’ nomisma and imitations of the John I Tzimiskes’ solidus and miliarenses of Basil II and Constantine VIII, etc. A srebrenik of Vladimir (type II) is also the very rare fi nd on the Taman Peninsula. It was pierced to be an amulet. Finds of the 10th – 11th centuries Byzantine coins and imitations testify to the close ties between the Tmutarakan Princedom and the Byzantine Empire and mark the way these coins penetrated in Phanagoria and Tamatarha. Four coins of the Crimean khanate were found in the settlement, dating from 16th – 18th centuries. Therefore, the published numismatic material clarifi es the dating of the Site of Vinogradny 7.
