Abstract

There are many international catchphrases in Russian catchword fund. Some of them can have an appeal function in publicistic texts. The author of this article fi nds the sources of these phrases, defi nes their genre and theme roles in modern communication and reveals the factors that infl uence the future of these language units. The international catchphrase analysis revealed that the antique catchphrases dominate in Russian catchword fund. There are also some big groups of German, French and English catchphrases. Only a few of international catchphrases have Spanish, Italian and other national roots. In publicistic writing international catchphrases can be presented in different slogan genres: statements, descriptions, appeals, mottoes, battle cries and imperatives. Some phrases express aspirations of working people who want to join and fi ght against enslavers and capitalists all around the world. Other catchphrases represent red ideas and socialist ideology. Also, there are some phrases that contain democratic appeals and deal with moral, civil, judicial, business or cultural parts of our life. The analysis proves that international catchphrases can undergo different transformations. However, slogans of radical red movement are the easiest to transform.
