Аннотация

В статье рассматривается новейший этап изучения романо-британско- го урбанизма. Данный этап следует начинать с момента выхода монографии Дж. Уочера, которая стала фундаментом для дальнейших исследований «городской» проблематики. Современное изучение городов римской Британии тесно связано с рядом масштабных и многолетних полевых работ (М. Фулфорда в Силчестере, Ф. Крамми в Колчестере, Ш. Фриэра и Р. Ниблетт в Сент-Олбансе), результаты которых в последнее десятилетия все активнее дополняются данными охранных раскопок (последние имеют особое значе- ние в Лондоне). Теоретическое переосмысление урбанизации римской Британии началось с публикации монографии М. Миллетта, сделавшего акцент на региональной специфике и вариативности городского развития, а также подчеркнувшего «бриттский» фактор в по- явлении и жизни городов. Идеи, высказанные М. Миллеттом, получили развитие в рабо- тах Дж. Крайтона, который предпринял попытку реконструировать роль местных элит в урбанизации Британии. Несколько иной подход продемонстрирован в работах М. Питтса и Д. Перринга, рассматривавших региональный контекст урбанизации; по их мнению, провинциальные города представляли собой «чуждый» для автохтонного окружения эле- мент. Ряд специальных вопросов – о характере городских идентичностей, связи городов с источниками воды, кризисе городов в позднеантичное время – анализируется в трудах Д. Мэттингли, Л. Ревелл, А. Роджерса. Все это – вкупе с постоянным увеличением числа источников, как вещественных, так и археологических – создает необходимые условия для перехода исследований романо-британского урбанизма на качественно новый уровень.
