Abstract

In the modern history of archaeology there is no study devoted to the history of the State Academy of the History of Material Culture of the period of 1934–1936, which would have been based on a set of previously unknown archival documents. The article presents a general overview of unpublished archival materials, identifi ed by this time and being stored in the archives of St. Petersburg and Moscow. The study of these documents signifi cantly expanded the modern understanding of the extremely diffi cult time for the academy. The murder of the First Secretary of the Leningrad Regional Committee of the All-Union Communist Party (of Bolsheviks) S.M. Kirov, the subsequent death of the chairman of the Academy N.Ya. Marr, the subsequent internal scandals, external purges of personnel and further arrests and expulsions became the starting point for this period. As a result, the Academy lost its independence and was included in the Academy of Sciences of the USSR as an ordinary institute.
