Abstract

The article deals with the results of reconstruction of the images of the two samename gospel characters – Righteous Lazarus, the Four-Days Dead and Lazarus the Beggar. Not connected with each other in terms of events and born in different contexts – pseudo-real and parable, they coincide at the symbolic level – of deep meanings, which together form the religious picture of the world. Written on the East Slavic basis and relaying new system of values, new worldview, into the Slavic model of the world, manuscripts of the early Middle Ages became the material for reconstruction. Righteous Lazarus, the Four-Days Dead is indued with real person`s traits and in the historical perspective becomes a signifi cant symbol of faith in Christ, faith in the Resurrection. Parable Lazarus the Beggar is an example of the suffering and humility that will be rewarded after the Resurrection. Born by the imagination of different authors – evangelists John and Luke, already in the Book of the Gospels, the two Lazaruses discover a tendency to the mutual projection, which is objectifi ed by phraseological units that have become set in the Russian language picture of the world. The surviving manuscripts play an important role in understanding of the New Testament. In this case, the greatest interest for a researcher lays in the revealed transformations of the New Testament`s images determined by the new “habitat” for them – the culture of ethnos accepting a new picture of the world.
