Abstract

The paper describes a burial of a rich woman who lived in the Hellenistic Phanagoria, which was discovered in 1974. The complex not touched by plunderers represented a structure imitating a stone sarcophagus. It looked like a stone box made of fi nished limestone slabs. This stone tomb represents the richest burial in ‘stone boxes’ from Phanagoria. It contained unique gold jewelry (a necklace and earrings) and black-glazed pottery. At the same time, a set of vessels is quite typical for funeral goods from stone tombs of Hellenistic Phanagoria. The architecture of this burial structure is quite conventional for the Phanagorian necropolis, except for a stone fl oor that is not found in any other similar tomb from this ancient city. Most of Phanagorian ‘stone boxes’ were built in the second half of the 2nd century BC. The published burial most probably dates back to the second half of the 3rd – fi rst half of the 2nd century BC. It is most likely one of the earliest burials in ‘stone boxes’ from Phanagoria.
