Abstract

Hellanicus of Lesbos is one of the three greatest Greek historians of the 5th century B.C., side by side with Herodotus and Thucydides. It is beyond doubt that Hellanicus repeatedly visited Athens and knew the history of that polis very well. And, in the long run, it was exactly he who was fi rst to generate an idea of a special historical work on Athens and Attica. As a result, in the end of his scholarly development, Hellanicus’ Atthis was written. It was his last and concluding work, and it contained, as the author of this article believes, a certain synthesis of mythographical, chorographical and chronological topics. The Atthis discussed Athens’ history from legendary time right up to the events contemporary with the historian. Only fragments (on the most various matters) of that treatise are extant, and the article is devoted to the analysis of the fragments in question.

Keywords
