Abstract
The article discusses the main trends in the development of Tanais in the 1st – first half of the 2nd century AD. The boundaries of this period are the restoration of Tanais after the punitive campaign of the Bosporan king Polemo at the end of the 1st century BC (on the one hand) and the destruction of the city in the 140s AD carriers of the Late Sarmatian culture (on the other hand).
Currently available data indicate the continuation of the development of Tanais after the catastrophe of the end of the 1st century BC. Already in the 1st century AD, new buildings were being built on the territory of the settlement. Towards the end of the Cotys I reign (45–68), the economy stabilized, expressed in the establishment of trade contacts. An important stage in the development of the city was the reign of king Sauromates I (93–123). As a result of the work carried out to restore the fortifi cation of Tanais, a city citadel is formed, surrounded by defensive walls and a moat. Within the framework of it, ground and basement structures are being built up. It is noteworthy that in the study of basements destroyed in the mid-3rd century AD, early horizons can be traced. This suggests that as early as the 1st and 2nd centuries AD, the inhabitants of Tanais in the settlement site restored the main buildings. Conducting large-scale construction work at the turn of the 1st and 2nd centuries AD in the framework of state policy on the Bosporus led to an increase in the fl ow of coins to Tanais. Later, during the fi rst half of the 2nd century AD, there was no sharp decline in the infl ow of Bosporan coins into the city, which indicates the stability of the internal urban market and the Tanais economy as a whole.
