Abstract

The paper is a publication of a scaly helmet found in the burial No. 773 of the Volna-1 Necropolis located in the southwestern part of the Taman peninsula, nearby the village of Volna. There are many tombs with weapons have been excavated on the territory of this necropolis. Meanwhile such element of the protective armor as a helmet is unusual for the necropolis’ profi le, as well as the grave goods in whole region.

It is important to note that such type of helmet was found for the first time. A total of seven scaly helmets found on the territory of the Dnieper are known, but all of them differ from the new fi nd. Most likely, the Volna helmet was made in the workshop of some center of the European or Asian Bosporus by the order of a wealthy and infl uential person. Apart from the helmet, the numerous grave goods were discovered in the tomb: a sword, arrow- and spearheads, bronze decorations, household items and tableware. The set of personal belongings and funeral offerings gives reason to believe that a representative of the military elite was buried in tomb No. 773, and it allows authors to date the burial to the middle – second half of the fourth century BC.
