Abstract

The article deals with Alexander’s the Great panhellenic ideology, during his Eastern campaign. The author pays attention to the historiographical situation of the problem taking into account domestic and foreign achievements to make conclusion that the problem of Alexander’s Panhellenism hasn’t been suffi ciently researched.

It should be pointed out that both in Soviet historiography, and in some cases in the foreign historiography of panhellenism Alexander’s the Great ideology is considered very superfi cially and is a part of the review of the problem of pan-hellenism in general. At the same time, little research has been devoted to Alexander’s panhellism, especially in Russia. In addition, the author explores Alexander’s panhellenism in the East. Using the comprehensive analysis of the ancient narrative tradition, the author regards the ideology of panhellenism since Persian invasion to 330 BC, indicating the burning of Persepolis as a key event. After the pointed occasion, the panhellenic demonstration in the narrative sources became rare. Considering this event to be a key one in the aspect of changing the ideologies of Alexander the Great, the author nevertheless points to cases of panhellenistic propaganda after changing ideologies. After replacing, panhellenistic ideology with orientalism, the demonstration of panhellenistic slogans was a necessity. The need to justify themselves to their Macedonian-Greek environment, to demonstrate their achievements in the conquest of the wealth of the East was the reason for the use of “outdated slogans” of panhellenism. Later, when orientalism was used as a new course, the Greek-Macedonian opposition of Alexander began to use panhellenistic ideology against the new «King of Asia». The purpose of the attempt was to stop the political tendency of offi cial political course.

The conclusion is that panellinism has evolved naturally: from the official ideology, panellinism turns into the opposition ideology of some representatives of the Greek-Macedonian elite.
