Abstract

Uncommon altars were discovered on the western borders of the ancient Bosporus. Libations are the bloodless offerings to the deities both of the earth and the subterranean. The huge quantity of wine was a part of this custom. The ancient population drank a lot of wine, even slaves. Mercenaries’ wages include also the wine. The altars in Artesian were probably built by such warriors. The search of possible analogies led to western Thrace, where same altars for the libations were constructed in the Roman period. Probably, they were built by the descendants of the indigenous population of those lands, the representatives of Thracian tribes. Most likely, Artesian (Parosta?) appeared at the place of the military settlement of hired warriors and their descendants. The altars refer to the times, when the Thracians, as special kind of infantry, were presented as a part of the population. It’s possible to think about Thracian infl uence, but it isn’t more than hypothesis. The sacrifi cial wine might have been local. At the time of building altars in the Bosporus, a lot of cheap wine was produced here.
