D.A. Gainullin, F.A. Malikov, N.N. Grigoriev (Ufa) – The Shulgan-Tash (Kapova) Cave Protection: Improvement Attempt,1960–1981

Abstract

Based on archival materials, the article deals with attempts of preservation and use of the Shulgan-Tash cave (Kapova) in 1960–1981. Highest executive authorities of the Bashkir Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic and the Russian Federation made different efforts to organize the protection of this greatest cultural heritage object. The history of the early stage of the evolution of views on the Shulgan-Tash Cave as a historical, cultural, natural, scientific and recreational resource is given. The key events of the fi rst two decades after the discovery of the Paleolithic rock paintings in the Shulgan-Tash (Kapova) Cave related to the projects and proposals of specialists, plans and activities for the protection and improvement of the cave and surrounding areas, the development of tourist infrastructure, the safety of visitors and the visitor management are considered.
