Abstract
The article deals with a rare and important fi nd of the Byzantine gold in Phanagoria, a solid of Leo III the “Isaurian” (717‒741) found during the excavation of the Khazar quarter (“The Lower Town” Site) in 2018. In 2016, here four coins of 8th century have already been found: three Byzantine solids and the Abbasid dirham. Two solid of Tiberius III Apsimar, 698‒705, were found during excavations of the street adjacent to the south side of Houses 10 and 16. A solid of Constantine V Copronymus with Leo IV Khazar, 741‒775, comes from the House 20 adjacent to the northeast corner of the House 10. Apart from the solidi, a silver dirham of Al Mahdi, 775‒785, was found on the fl oor of the House 6, in the Room 3. This join fi nd of the Byzantine gold and Abbasid dirham expands our notion on the currency of Byzantine and Arab coins in the Khazarian Khanate during the 8th century. The uncovered coins demonstrate the short synchronous circulation of the Byzantine gold and Cufi c silver in Khazaria during the last quarter of the 8th century. The publication of the coins enriches the database for the Byzantine and Cufic numismatics from the Russian South.
