Abstract
The article is a study of the origin of the ancient city of Gabala, which was the capital of the Caucasian Albania during several centuries. Archaeological excavations on Gabala began in 1960s and were continued today. The cultural layers of the Late Bronze and the Early Iron Ages, revealed during the 2012 season, shed a new light on the solution of the issue of Gabala’s development. The authors analyze numerous remains of the material culture found during the recent excavations on Gabala. Archaeological material certifi es not only to the high level of the economic life of this society during the Late Bronze to the Early Iron Ages, but also allows suggesting its social differentiation. The authors conclude that the settlement emerged here at the turn of the second and fi rst millenniums BC gave life to the ancient city of Gabala. Suffi ciently high level of economic activity, developed social relations, rich resources contributed to the acceleration of the formation and the development of the ancient city.
