This study begins as a theoretical excursus into the history of the notion of “picturesque” with representative samples drawn from “picturesque travels” from French and English publications. These could be the patterns for similar Russian book art in this category of print documents. This research classifies the Russian issues both by periods of publication and by the character of the editions (scientific and literary). The book-art under study is drawn from the books by P. Pallas, I. Kruzenstern on scientific expeditions and on the works of the artists A. Martinov, P. Svinjin, G. Gagarin. All demonstrate the adoption of the European aesthetic of the “picturesque travels”. By the turn of the 19th century, this genre had become an important component of the educated Russian readers’ visual culture as many acquired this aesthetic from the book art in Russian album editions and other literary descriptions of travels.
