Abstract

The article is devoted to the genesis and fi liation of the myth of Siberia “Hyperborean” in the poetry of Vladimir Rayevsky and correspondence of Gavriil Baten’kov. The provenance of the myth about Hyperborea is found in ancient mythology and literature – in the lyrics of Pindarus and Vergillius: poets recreate two dissimilar myths about the blessed, happy, summer Hyperborean land (Pindarus) and the harsh, cruel, winter Hyperborea (Vergillius). Anthological imagery is inherited by Russian poets – V.A. Zhukovskiy, A.S. Pushkin at the beginning of the 19th century, the life of the poet in Russia is fi lled with light, happiness, Apollonian delights.

Poets-Dыecembrists combined the Ancient Greek and Roman versions of the Hyperborean myth: the distinctive features of the Siberian space are the home peace; the happy remoteness of Siberia from capital political battles; healthy and severe climate. Siberians were known Apollonian delights: creativity and reading. The circle of reading is wide enough: here we fi nd texts of very different subjects and languages – literature, science and philosophy and religious; texts in Russian, English, French and German.

After the December uprising mythopoethic idyll was interrupted. Siberia became a place of exile and prison for the nobility. Read was only intellectual pleasure, and the book – a true friend.
