Abstract

The article attempts to supplement the database of archaeological monuments of Afghanistan on the basis of a comparison of the data presented in the famous book by V. Ball (in collaboration with J.-Cl. Gardin), as well as on recently published report on the work of the Soviet-Afghan archaeological expedition (head I.T. Kruglikova). These data are discussed on a new level, using methods of remote sensing and multi-scale topographic maps of the region previously diffi cult to access for study. The region from the north and the south, bounded by the neighborhood of the modern cities of Andkhui and Maimana, bordered with the valley of the rivers Almar and Shirintagao from the West and East has become the object of the research in
this article.

Thanks to the mapping of complex data, the archaeological map of the region which has included 53 monuments (from the fi rst centuries of the I Millennium BC up to the late Middle Ages) is composed. Thus, for 46 objects geographical coordinates on the basis of the analysis of space pictures and modern topographic maps are determined. On the basis of the available materials a number of conclusions of historical character is made.
